Will the V5000 Sky Dragon enter commercial service by the end of 2026?
China’s Fengfei Aviation Technology has completed a successful transition flight of its V5000 Sky Dragon, a heavy-class electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The five-ton platform can carry up to 10 passengers or equivalent cargo. Its fully electric version offers a range of 250 km, while a hybrid configuration extends that to 1,500 km. Unlike smaller Western eVTOL projects such as those from Joby Aviation, Lilium, and Archer Aviation, which focus on urban air mobility for 4–6 passengers, the V5000 targets heavier cargo and regional routes. The aircraft reportedly completed vertical takeoff, transition to cruise flight, and vertical landing — a key technical milestone. However, commercial deployment depends on regulatory certification, safety validation, production scaling, and infrastructure readiness. Heavy eVTOL platforms face stricter certification standards and operational challenges than lighter urban air taxis. The uncertainty lies in whether Fengfei can complete certification and begin real commercial operations within the next year.
